Packing Power: Toddler Lunch Tips That Meet NC Guidelines

At GraceLife Academy, we know that what goes into your child’s lunchbox fuels their play, learning, and growing. To keep our little learners healthy and thriving, we follow the nutritional guidelines set by the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE). These guidelines help ensure that every child receives a balanced, nourishing meal each day—and with a little planning, packing lunch can be both simple and fun!

What Does a Compliant Lunch Look Like?

For toddlers (ages 1–2), every lunch must include:

  • 1 Protein (such as meat, egg, or cheese. *Yogurt is not considered a protein*)

  • 2 Fruits, 2 Vegetables, or 1 Fruit and 1 Vegetable

  • 1 Grain (like bread, crackers, rice, or noodles)

Each of these has a minimum serving size—like ¼ cup of fruit or veggies, or 4 crackers—so we’re not asking for big portions, just balance.

Why It Matters

Meals that meet state guidelines don’t just keep us in compliance—they help your child stay full, focused, and energized through a full day of learning and fun. If a lunch is missing a required item, we’ll supplement to ensure your child has a complete meal. (There may be an additional charge for that.)

But don’t worry—meeting the guidelines doesn’t have to mean complicated meal prep. Here are a few lunch ideas to inspire you!
